DISRUPTIVE IDEAS 09?
Twitter for me
Looking at ’08, Twitter has to be the disruptive idea for me. It turned around my thinking in all kinds of ways. It made the internet read/write in a way it never was before.
People Publishing
I realize I am one of the people who is able to use the web pretty freely. I have my own blog and I’m pretty comfortable with emails.
The rest of the world decided that text messaging was the way to go. That’s fine too. I understand that having a device in your pocket that you can send notes to your friends is not only a good idea, it is easy to understand. You need no special training and you don’t need a machine the size of a suitcase to do it. A mobile is cheap enough and the cost per message is not to much. (although I did read it is cheaper to get data from the Hubble telescope!)
The step beyond
For me what Twitter does is takes text messaging and turns it into publishing. Some wag said it is for people who want to send a text but don’t know who to send it too. That is true but in the same way newspapers are written because someone thinks there is something important to say but they are not quite sure who wants to know.
‘Publishing’ is the key word here. You are making your text message public. If there are people who want to know is another matter but it puts the power of publishing in your hand and your pocket.
What do you think will be the idea that changes your thinking in ’09?
