This is the second post in a multi-part series about integrating the internet with the real world.
In “The Scannable World: Mobile Phones As Barcode Scanners,” we introduced the concept of using your phone to scan barcoded objects in the real world. We also touched on some of the history surrounding this technology. One of the issues with barcoded ads today is where you find them: newspapers, arguably a dying medium whose subscriber base isn’t necessarily composed of cutting-edge early adopters. So how can barcodes make their way to the people who actually use the web and other modern technologies?
The article goes on to talk up Neo Media and their launch of 2D codes and scanning technology. It seems that the whole 2D scanning world is waiting for the whole patent issue to be sorted out and this could well be the issue that is holding every thing back.
Format wars?
There are several implementations of the same basic priciple but as yet many of the systems seem to co exist. Many implementations of the scaning softaware seems to be able to scan at least the QR Codes and the Datamatrix codes but as more proprietry systems are introduced I for one certainly feel that the field may well fragment as end users become unsure of interoperability.
It seems unbilievable that these companies can still believe that they can make a patented system popular after one fiasco after another from the Betamax/VHS battle through to the latest competing Blu ray systems.
2D codes could make a perfect link between the pysical world and the internet and be the basis for many location based services.
