New Google service sends you text reminders, even in Ireland

No, I can’t quite believe it! Something new on the interweb that works here in Ireland and not just in the US of A.

I’ve been trying out Googles new ‘Apps’ package. It’s a suite of online applications that aim to replace the ‘office’ type application that eats up half you hard disk space and costs you an arm and a leg. To say nothing of requiring you to spend a while every few months installing vital upgrade/repairs and then shell out for the next version.

Ok, gripes over. What is the big deal? Well as they (Google) run the thing at their server, they take care of the upgrades and fixes. They also look after the data you store with them and before you worry about ‘what if they lose it?’ just ask yourself when you did the last off site back up of your hard disk? Exactly.

Google SitesSo they have the usual suspects like Word processor and sreadsheets with most of the day to day functions. Not up to running a space program but good enough for the day to day stuff. There is also pretty easy to use web page wiki style publishing program which is interesting in that it has a pretty clear access control system. Using it you can allow access to just a few people you invite by email or to anyone with an email address in your domain like john@xyz.com and mery@xyz.com or you can just publish to the world like a regular website.

So this enables you to run the website as a intranet/inhouse website and people can collaborate on the pages making there own updates and corrections for instance or you can use it in a more conventional way to publish you communications to the world.

Google CalendarI have also just started using Google calendar after years of looking at blank diary pages, dead cell phones and paper caledars hanging in the kitchen open on the wrong month if not the wrong year! Why the sudden interest? Well it id not only easy to use but it has the killer feature of sending me a reminder when ever I like on my mobile phone for my up coming events. Even here in Ireland!
